Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Here’s the car in question:

Kinja'd!!!

I’m not planning on swapping cars, but it at least seems like a lot better than most of the other trade options people have gotten.

I’ve never understood trading a vehicle. I get wanting to try other things, and maybe I get needing a completely different car (family car for a sports car), but don’t understand the appeal or benefits of a trade vs. two separate sales.

Trade offers are unpredictable at best. Who is getting what they want? It seems like a compromise on each participant, after realizing that what they want is not attainable.

Does the other party really want your car, or do they just want out of there car? Have they attempted to sell their car?

Absolutely not. Not only are those CLAs dime-a-dozen and there weren’t even any rare differentiating options to be had (like a manual). T hat one has an accident and it’s not exactly low mileage either. Hard pass.

Sales tax.

In my state, there is zero sales tax on a trade. If you were to sell it for a price, the state is entitled to the sales tax on the reported value , which the purchaser needs to pay at the DMV before titling and registering the vehicle .

Granted, it’s only a 5.5% sales tax, but if you buy a car for $15 ,000, you would need to pay another $825 plus registration and plates before you can legally drive it.  If you traded the car instead, you’d pay only for registration and plates.

If this was a low mileage 2014 C300, I’d be temped. It piqued my interest because it is a pretty fair trade, at least on paper.

I’ve come to realize the 3 is a known and any replacement is an unknown. I’m not really willing to spend the money to get a replacement that would make it worth it long term. Sadly my GF has a bunch of med school debt, if she didn’t have that, I’d probably get an AMG while I’ve still got sole control over my finances.

I’d be patient and wait for the right car, keeping the 3.  Depreciation is still working its course.

CLA slotted in below the C, and many complain that they can see why.  I’ve known people who have loved them, but it might be lacking some expected refinement.

Keep it separate, we have one joint account that we both fund for the obvious things. Other than that she spends hers and I spend mine, we mention purchases over 1k and discuss anything that is much more. Full disclosure; I don’t know anyone else who does this.

I just drove those two E63 wagons. A nnnnnnnnd lololololololol. U nbelievable thrust and noise. The new one i s a MF rocketship, just doing the easiest donuts ever at 1/3 throttle. I didn’t bite on the older one, it was dirty and that’s 997 money.

This all started with my boss telling how he thought his friend got some bad-ass new Mercedes, but then he found out it was just a station wagon.

When we were shopping for the wife’s car in 2014 we tested a CLA 250. Found the interior cheap, if I recall correctly, and neither of us liked how the engine/trans performed, or how it rode. Oh, and bumps came through loudly in the cabin. I was disappointed because I liked how it looked.

Kinja'd!!!1

That doesn’t even compute in my head. How do you tell DMV I traded this car for that car? My DMV wants a bill of sale and signed title and all sorts of first born children.

How does it work when you trade a civic and some money for a bentley? Do they not charge tax on money portion because there is a trade involved?

Why isn’t everything a trade? Are you not trading pile of metal for a pile of paper?

Kinja'd!!! CobraJoe > PartyPooper2012
08/31/2020 at 15:06

Kinja'd!!!0

In my state, all private sale values are self reported. But yes, bill of sale and signed title are required to transfer a title to a new owner (which is only applicable if there is no lien).

Partial trades - where vehicle value differences are money is added on top of the trade - require the person who paid the cash to also to pay sales tax on the cash portion, but only on the cash portion.

Why isn’t everything a trade? Are you not trading pile of metal for a pile of paper?

From my experience? Because dealers would never make money on equal value trades, and two separate private parties rarely have vehicles that they are willing to swap that are worth the same value.

Good luck getting the state to believe that a thick stack of $100 bills is “a pile of paper”... but then again, falsely reporting lower sale prices on private cash sales is not uncommon. (Though I bet they’d be very suspicious about a Bentley sold privately for $500.)

EDIT: Found this about partial trades, they must be similar types of property being traded:

If the property provided by the purchaser is not similar to the property being purchased, or is a commodity regularly traded on an open market, the transaction is a barter transac tion and not a trade-in, and tax must be collected on the full price of the property sold.

In Arizona you just bring in the signed and notarized title. They don’t care how you obtained it. I sold a car to myself a few weeks ago in order to get the title registered to my LLC.

I am not a huge fan of having things notarized when buying/selling.

The reason - it is a huge inconvenience. I buy things on weekends when i have time away from work. This means I have to take time off work to go notarize a piece of paper that says I am who I say I am according to another piece of paper with my mug on it.

So I guess I should’ve prefaced this with I’m not seriously thinking about this. It’s at least somewhat of an equal trade, on paper. I drove a CLA45 AMG a couple years ago, and it was too small inside even for my 5'9" frame.

No they’re actually pretty reliable overall. But unless it's a 45, it's not something anyone who's ever been remotely interested in cars would want to live with on a daily basis.

Most sellers preemptively get the title notarized in order to reduce hassle for the buyer. Even then, third party title agencies all have a notary on staff, and you have to visit either  them or the DMV to transfer the title into your name anyways.

Funny thing, I know a woman who has one and LOVES it. Base model, no lighting package, no moonroof, white on black, but it still makes her happy.  She actually bought it new, not even a lease.  Not a car for you or I, but somehow they seemed to find a customer base.

They’re been really good reliability wise! Even when maintenance isn’t perfect, because let’s face it, people who drive these don’t give a damn about maintenance.

If I were to have a 45, it would be a wingless GLA. And even then, I might put a super mild lift and some bigger AT tires on it. And by lift I mean probably just standard GLA height. And by bigger tires I mean like an inch overall diameter. Hmm... Maybe when these get really cheap...

I would like one, but to make that a reality I’d have to sell my M3, and that’s not something I’d really like to do, since I still really enjoy the car and I wouldn’t be able to get what I want. Also the couple of Porsches I’ve driven have had obtrusively heavy clutche s.

Kinja'd!!! fintail > AMGtech - now with more recalls!

I suppose the relative simplicity of the car helps it in that regard. The engine is simple, not a lot of wacky accessories to go wrong. They probably sell to two groups - leasers or non-car posers who will abuse it like any other appliance, and careful more mature people (likely mostly women) who will baby it.

Yeah, the wing needs to go, I’d be a little self conscious driving it like that.  Beefy tires and a slight lift might make it cool in a funny way.  I am sure they are still depreciating swiftly - if the guts hold up, could be fun.
